Poster Review 4

There is one female in this poster which makes her outnumbered compared to the four males. Making the males a dominant sex, this could link to the audience watching this film as they could be demographically more male than female. The mix of race shows us that the film is modern as this has become more acceptable now than in the past. The fact they look like they are all friends shows that the film isn't race related violence. The dog shows connotations of violence and aggression towards the audience and the colour red used for the title also symbolises aggression blood and death, which are all negative.

The colours in this poster compliment each other well all being different shades of purple and blue, however this still makes the poster look very dark and dismal giving the audience the idea that something negative is going to happen in the film. The colours featured in the poster also fit in well with the colour scheme of the title of the film. Furthermore the layout of the poster is very large and in the audiences face. The title of the film is on the same level of hierarchy of importance as the characters shown on the poster as they are the same size of each other.

A film poster is a poster used to advertise a film. There may be several versions for one film, with variations in regards to size, content and country of production of the poster. It usually contains an image with text, though this has evolved over time from image-free bill posters through to the highly visual digital productions of today. The text usually contains the film title in large lettering and often the names of the main actors. It may also include a tag line, the name of the director, names of characters, the release date, etc.

Film posters are displayed inside and on the outside of movie theaters, and elsewhere on the street or in shops. The same images would appear in a film exhibitor's press book and may also be used on websites, DVD-packaging, flayers, advertisements in newspapers and magazines, etc.

Use of such posters goes back to the earliest public exhibitions of film, where they began as outside placards listing the programme of (short) films to be shown inside the hall or movie theater. By the early 1900s, they began to feature illustrations of a scene from each individual film or an array of overlaid images from several scenes. Other movie posters have used artistic interpretations of a scene or even the theme of the film, represented in a wide variety of artistic styles. Movie posters are produced in a large number of sizes to meet various advertising needs.






In the first paragraph of this research i am told the conventions found on a film poster. I will also be including all these features to make it clear to the audience what i'm producing. Next we are told where film posters are found this could depend on the target audience you are trying to reach. If you place the poster where your target audience will be found then the film poster campaign will be more successful. I will make sure my film poster can be produced in a variety of sizes in order to meet advertising needs.

In film theory, genre refers to the method based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed. Most theories of film genre are borrowed from literary genre criticism. As with genre in a literary context, there is a great deal of debate over how to define or categorize genres.Besides the basic distinction in genre between fiction and documentary, film genres can be categorized in several ways.

Fictional films are usually categorized according to their setting, theme topic, mood, or format. The setting is the milieu or environment where the story and action takes place. The theme or topic refers to the issues or concepts that the film revolves around. The mood is the emotional tone of the film. Format refers to the way the film was shotor the manner of presentation. An additional way of categorizing film genres is by the target audience. Some film theorists argue that neither format nor target audience are film genres.

Film genres often branch out into sub genres, as in the case of the courtroom and trial-focused sub genre of drama known as the legal drama. They can be combined to form hybrid genres, such the melding of horror and comedy in the Evil Dead films.

There's no narrow definition. According to International Thriller Writers, a thriller is characterized by "the sudden rush of emotions, the excitement, sense of suspense, apprehension, and exhilaration that drive the narrative, sometimes subtly with peaks and lulls, sometimes at a constant, breakneck pace." In short, a thriller thrills. How? Mostly through skillful plotting.

Thriller is a genre of fiction in which tough, resourceful, but essentially ordinary heroes are pitted against villains determined to destroy them, their country, or the stability of the free world. Part of the allure of thrillers comes from not only what their stories are about, but also how they are told. High stakes, non-stop action, plot twists that both surprise and excite, settings that are both vibrant and exotic, and an intense pace that never lets up until the adrenalin packed climax.

Thriller fiction is hot! What makes readers love it so? How is it different from straight mystery or suspense? What is a thriller?

Homer's Odyssey is one of the oldest stories in the Western world and is regarded as an early prototype of the thriller.

Today, thriller novels provide a rich literary feast embracing a wide variety of worlds - the law, espionage, action-adventure, medicine, police and crime, romance, history, politics, high-tech, and religion.
Thrillers are usually about life and death situations. When skillfully written, thrillers can also carry the load of bigger themes than strict realism will allow. Other examples of this genre in literature include The Da Vinci Code, The Hunt for Red October, The Day of the Jackal, and Jurassic Park.

The Thriller fiction genre, sometimes called suspense fiction, is a genre of literature that typically entails fast-paced plots, numerous action scenes, and limited character development. One example is that: the hero, who may even be an ordinary citizen drawn into danger and intrigue by circumstances beyond their control faces danger alone or in the company of a small band of companions. The protagonist may be a law enforcement agent, a journalist, or a soldier, but typically he or she is cut off from the resources of "their" organization.

Part of the allure of thrillers comes from not only what their stories are about but how they are told. The plot of a thriller is usually driven by the villain, who presents obstacles that the hero must overcome.

Not all thrillers are suspense novels; but many suspense novels are thrillers. The average thriller is longer than the average mystery, which makes a brisk pace crucial to success.






By reading this research i know straight away my film will have to have a lot of action in and tension in order to keep the audience intrigued and make them want to carry on watching to see what will happen next. In most thriller films there is a villain, there will also be a bad guy in our thriller film who will take the main character role. The plot will not be revealed straight away making the audience carry on watching. Furthermore we are told that thrillers are normally about real life and death situations our film is involving death and not just one death.

Genre is the term for any category of literature, as well as various other forms of art or culture e.g. music, based on some loose set of stylistic criteria. Genres are formed by conventions that change over time as new genres are invented and the use of old ones are discontinued. Often, works fit into multiple genres by way of borrowing and recombining these conventions.

While the scope of the word "genre" is commonly confined to art and culture, it also defines individuals' interactions with and within their environments. In order to be recognized as genre these interactions and environments must be recurring.

A teaser trailer is a truncated version of a theatrical trailer intended to entice the audience about an upcoming movie and to begin hype on major films.

Teaser trailers, unlike the typical theatrical trailer, are usually very short in length, usually under 30 seconds. The purpose of the teaser trailer is not to show a bunch of out-of-context clips in order to give the audience an understanding about the movie's plot or theme, but rather to let them know that the movie is coming up in the near future, and to add to the hype of the upcoming movie event. Teaser trailers are often made while the film is still in production or being edited and as a result they may feature scenes or alternate versions of scenes that are not in the finished film. Teaser trailers today are increasingly focused on Internet downloading and the convention circuit.

Teaser trailers are usually only made for big-budget and popularly themed movies. Recent examples of major motion picture events that used teaser trailers to gain hype are the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the new Star Wars films and the Spider-Man films. An early example of the teaser trailer was the one for the Superman film by Richard Donner when as the film was already nearly a year late was designed to re-invigorate interest in the release.

Teaser trailers are usually shown among other movie previews, and appear months before the longer and more detailed theatrical trailer does. Some teasers have been known to appear as long as nine months to a year prior to the movie's final release date. While teaser trailers are regarded as a bonus to cinema goers in the case of the teaser trailer for The Phantom Menace that was attached to the film 'The Siege'"it was reported that the majority of the audience walked out after the trailer had screened.

Most DVD versions of these movies will have both their teaser and theatrical trailers in their bonus sections.






This tells me the purpose of a teaser trailer for a film and why i will be making a teaser trailer. It also explains the difference between a teaser trailer and a normal trailer for a film. Due to being told that teaser trailers are mainly focused on the Internet i will make sure i do some audience research on the Internet involving peoples opinions on a specific teaser trailer. Teaser trailers are produced whilst the movie is still being produced therefore instead of writing a specific date on my teaser trailer for when the movie will be released i shall write coming soon instead

Here i have screenshot parts of the teaser trailers from each film i have researched. All 4 film trailers use edits where words appear on the screen. This could be the film title or simply telling the audience clues about the film.

Overall View on Teaser Trailers

The main purpose of making teaser film trailers is to gain the audiences attention and make them want to see more of the film, in order to do this various media techniques are used such as the transitions, fades, dissolves and the tempo of the cuts. A brief amount of text is edited into the film teaser which gives important information to the audience about when the film will be released, the name of the film, well known actors/actresses appearing in the film and tag lines to intrigue the audience. The non-diegetic sound used in the teasers help emphasise what is going on or add tension to the trailer. Music is commonly found in teasers to set an atmosphere.
Overall for such a short trailer it is rather compact as it has to show the main characters a brief storyline, however be careful not to release too much to the audience that it isn't worth them going to see the film, information about when it is released and the main setting for the film.

The teaser trailer starts with a close up of a girl saying the words ‘you are going to die’ the background is plain in order to make the audience focus on the girl and the words she is saying. This sentence lets the audience know straight away that there is going to be some form of violence in the film. After this there are fast shots of various characters in the film ranging from close ups to show facial expressions, a long shot of three characters running from what the audience presume is danger, mid shots of two women with weapons also showing violence these fast different shots are one second long and last for 30 seconds. Whilst these shots are being shown there are translucent numbers appearing on the screen counting down from 30 making the audience feel the tension. Then the title of the film appears on the screen on a diagonal making the audience feel at unease white font with a turquoise background also making the text stand out. We then get shown an establishing shot of a lady with her back to the camera standing at the edge of a bridge, we see her jump however afterwards are shown her sitting in a car with another lady with blood all over her leaving the audience guessing to what happened. The sports car drives away fast into the distance and the audience are left with the name of the film and the words coming soon this is a popular convention used in film trailers.
What information is revealed about the genre?
We know that it is an action film due to the count down on the screen letting us know that something is always about to happen and keeping the audience on the edge of their seat. The reaction shots show that something major must have happened in the film in order for the characters facial expressions to respond this way. The weapons and what the characters say in the film let us know there is violence throughout and the fast movements of the sports car, running ect. Tell us people are running from trouble and trying not to get caught. This happens in the majority of action films. The background noise is uneasy for the viewer to listen to this could also mean the film is uneasy to watch and the music gets thicker adding more and more instruments until it stops for some more dialogue from the film.
What information is revealed about the storyline?
We instantly know someone dies in the film by what the character at the beginning of the trailer says and that there is more than one scene of violence however we do not know what the violence is about and how it ends. Or who dies. Or what the three boys are running from. This keeps the audience in suspense and will make them go to see the film in order to find out more.

The first thing the viewer sees are the words vertigo films in bright orange and with a black background the sound in the background of this is gunshots this sets the scene straight away. We then see a bird’s eye view of motorways and then an establishing shot of the city this lets the audience know that the film is set in an urban area. We then get a close up of a black teenager driving a car. We then get a close up that changes to a long shot showing a gang of lads walking aggressively towards the camera, doing hand gestures and wearing balaclavas across their faces. The audience think at the beginning that the sound is non diegetic but then we see one of the characters rapping directly towards the camera this makes the audience feel slightly uneasy. The words ‘1city’ then appear in the same font as ‘vertigo films’ did at the beginning keeping it consistent. We then see fast shots of the two gangs, we know there are two gangs due to one being in orange and the other being in purple. One of the characters has a prop of a gun showing their is violence involved in the film. The words ‘2 crews’ then appears giving the audience more of an idea about what the film is about. A two shot then appears of one lad strangling another showing more violence. Then the clips move faster fading between each shot to the next. Until the words ’24 hours’ appear. We also see girls in the gang acting in a masculine way. There are occasionally flashes of light throughout the trailer making the clips seem more dramatic. The trailer ends with a man shooting a gun directly towards the audience. Then the name of the film appears and the date it comes in the cinema. The music in the background is aggressive rapping this also helps to set the genre.
What information is revealed about the genre?
We know straight away that the film is about street gang crime due to the mis en scene and obvious conventions for a gang film. The costumes the characters are wearing, hoodies tracksuits balaclavas and hats. The non diegetic sound is the type of music gangs listen to. The props we see used, knives and guns.
What information is revealed about the storyline?
From the trailer we are not told much about the story line for this film however we do know that it involves a gangs war between two different gangs and deadly weapons are used.

The trailer starts with a long shot of the main character walking through two large doors this shows the audience the entrance of the main character. This then fades out to a black screen and we see an over the shoulder shot of the main character again another fade out happens and we see a clip from a nightclub. We then see one girl dancing on her own this gives the audience an idea of what the film is going to be about. If the audience are into dancing then this could also be a major selling point for the film. After that shot it goes back to the conversation with the two main characters about dance making it even clearer to the audience what the film is about. The next two clips we are shown in the trailer from the film is a ballroom dance and street dance. These are two completely different styles of dancing and could therefore appeal to more than one type of audience. We then see the main character without a top on this could appeal to teenage girls. A couple more characters are shown before the word ‘Step’ appears on the screen in big bold silver font and a spotty background. We are then shown another dancing clip from the film before the word ‘Up’ appears in a consistent font and background. A clip of the two main characters are shown again before ‘Step Up 3D’ appears on the screen. This allows the audience to know this is a follow on from step up 1 and step up 2 this could help sell the film if the audience have seen the previous films. The same patter follows and another dance clip is shown before the words ‘coming soon’ appear this normally comes at the end of a teaser trailer and is therefore breaking conventions. The trailer ends with the dancers throwing powder in the audience’s direction. The audience are told that the film is in 3d this information could help sell the film. The music in the background is dance music this goes well with the film.
What information is revealed about the genre?
Four seconds into the trailer the audience get a brief idea that the film is about dance after seeing a girl look like she is practicing a dance routine. There are various different styles of dancing throughout the trailer. From street, body popping, ball room to contemporary. We are also given the idea that it may be some romantic film when the trailer keeps showing the boy and girl together.
What information is revealed about the storyline?
The main character asks the girl ‘so tell me about yourself’ this means that they haven’t known each other long and then a clip from the nightclub is shown this could be how they met. We know the film involves a lot of dancing however we don’t know why or the storyline behind it.

ADULTHOOD OFFICIAL TRAILER

The trailer starts off with a scene from the film showing a medium close up of a male and female in bed together, this then fades to black and the two characters reappear in a close up camera shot the fade to black is repeated and the camera shot changes to a mid shot showing more of the mis en scene, the characters costumes are bare minimum with the girl in her underwear and the boy half naked this shows the film wouldn’t be suited for a younger audience and will have quite visual sex scenes. The trailer then fades out to an establishing shot of a bird’s eye view of the city at night time. The word ‘Pathe!’ is then placed on top of this in a white bubble writing effect to make it stand out. Next we are taken to a scene on the streets this is taken in day light and involves violence again showing it is not recommended for a young audience. One of the characters is wearing a hoodie which is a representation of bad youth. This then goes to a shot of blurred out headlights from cars on a busy road. The trailers shots then start to move at a quicker pace in the trailer to tease the audience more taking you to a clip from a busy nightclub, then this fades out to a clip of two people kissing outside, to a fight. All of these scenes represent young adults and what they do. This clip then freezes to a shot of a boy in a hoodie swinging a cricket bat at someone and the words ‘six years locked up’ then appear on the screen this makes the audience want to find out what happened in the film in order for that consequence to occur. Editing is used a lot in the next few seconds of the film in order to make it move along and exaggerate what the audience sees on the screen, which is violence, hoods on coats getting put up, gangs at night and angry emotions on people’s faces. The words ‘first day out’ appear in the same font on the screen making the audience think first day out of where? Also the words ‘time to settle the score’ come up on the screen looking like a threat, this keeps the audience on the edge of their seat. Girls are seen hitting boys which isn’t a feminine thing to do. Windows of cars are smashed showing no respect and girls in their underwear showing no self respect. The words ‘after kidulthood’ ‘comes’ ‘Adulthood’ letting the audience know this is a follow on from the the film kidulthood this could be a big selling point for people that have seen the film kidulthood and enjoyed it. ‘Coming soon’ is the last thing the viewer sees on the screen with a black background and white writing making it stand out. Furthermore the music used in the background of the trailer was made espically for this film using the lyrics 'from kidulthood to adulthood' the trailer build up and up until there is a drastic change in music changing the feel of the audience.
What information is revealed about the genre?
We know straight away that the film is about gangs and streets due to the mis en scene we see. With overly sexual scenes showing that the young ladies have no self respect for themselves and with the women using violence the same as males making them no different and have no standards. The language used is of no higher class ‘bruv’ ‘you gets me’ this allows the youth relate to what is being said in the film. The costumes are very stereotypical helping the audience know what the film is about the boys are wearing hoodies and the girls are either in minimum clothing or in tracksuits like the boys. There is a lot of violence and damage on properties showing a negative view on older youth.
What information is revealed about the storyline?
The writing that appears on the screen gives us clues to what is going to happen in the film. We know there is revenge from the previous film due to the last thing said in the trailer is ‘you think I forgot you blud’ We see police knowing there is trouble and high emotions on the characters faces this tells us something drastic will have happened in the story for this to occur. The major storyline isn’t gave away leaving the audience guessing. All the audience know is that something major will have happeded in order for someone to get locked up for six years. We also know that the characters from the previous film appear in this film.

First i will start off by working individually. Researching Film Teaser trailers, Film magazine front covers and Film posters these are all types of marking techniques in order to promote the film. I will use both primary and secondary research into my target audience this will help my products be more successful. Research into new media being used this means i will also be able to use it. And finally i will research into media advertising.
