Postmodernism

This is secondary research from the Internet
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postmodernism

Postmodernism is a tendency in contemporary culture characterized by the rejection of objective truth and global cultural narrative or meta-narrative. It emphasizes the role of language, power relations, and motivations; in particular it attacks the use of sharp classifications such as male versus female, straight versus gay, white versus black, and imperial versus colonial. Postmodernism has influenced many cultural fields, including literary criticism, sociology, linguistics, architecture, visual arts, and music.

Postmodernist thought is an intentional departure from modernist approaches that had previously been dominant. The term "postmodernism" comes from its critique of the "modernist" scientific mentality of objectivity and progress associated with the Enlightenment.

These movements, modernism and postmodernism, are understood as cultural projects or as a set of perspectives. "Postmodernism" is used in critical theory to refer to a point of departure for works of literature, drama, architecture, cinema, journalism, and design, as well as in marketing and business and in the interpretation of law, culture, and religion in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Indeed, postmodernism, particularly as an academic movement, can be understood as a reaction to modernism in the Humanities. Whereas modernism was primarily concerned with principles such as identity, unity, authority, and certainty, postmodernism is often associated with difference, plurality, textually, and skepticism.

This theory may be relevant to my final product of a film teaser trailer this is why i have looked into it. It seems to play a big part in media in today's society

The background of this film poster is plain black not revealing anything about the location and setting of the film to the audience. However it does help to make the text on the poster stand out. At the header of the poster we are given the names of some famous actors, this could be a selling point for the film if the audience like one of the actors featured in the poster. The white font also stands out on the black background. The first thing that catches the audiences eye is the huge yellow font title. The bright title combined with the size of the font makes it eye catching and the first thing the audience will notice when looking at the poster. In the middle of the poster we have 4 characters which look like they have burst through the title of the film giving a superhero effect. All the characters are in a uniform showing they have authority however all in different uniforms making them look like they aren't all on the same team working together like a football team would all wear the same uniform. The expressions in their faces are emotionless showing they are stern and have no feelings. They are all holding weapons or doing a violent gesture showing the audience there is violence in this film. Finally the picture has a splattered effect making it look messy this could also be a sign that the film is messy. Underneath the title we see a slogan 'shut up. Kick ass' this is very direct to the audience and due to it being a short slogan it will remain in the readers head. We are then given some more information written in a smaller font and in a grey colour this shows less importance as it doesn't stand out on the page as much as the other texts. Then in the footer of the poster we see 'in theaters now' this is in bright yellow so is again standing out however it isn't in a large font and therefore isn't taking the importance away from the yellow font title.

In the header of the Magazine Front cover there is a banner this draws the readers attention to it due it being white, the amount of white being used on this cover is very minimal making it more exaggurated when used. Also the neon green and black font help to make it stand out. The Masthead is just below this banner it is written in splattered blood type effect This goes with the film due to it having a violent nature. The picture of the main character is placed infront of the masthead this is a popular convention used on magazine front covers. In the background we can see faded superheros this reveals more about the film giving the audience the idea that this film is based on a comic book story Furthermore it tells us the name of these two superheros in the background in bold introducing us to the characters slightly. The character has blood on his face and looks as though he is drawing for a weapon therefore we know fighting is involved. The uniform he is in gives the idea that he has some sort of authority. The slogan used for this film on this cover is 'its bloody its brilliant and boy does it kick ass' The alliteration makes this slogan stay in the audiences head also the bright neon green font for the title of the film lets the reader know straight away what the magazine is about also the red font colour represent anger to the audience. In the footer of the magazine we are told what else features in the magazine.

The first thing the audience hear is a dramatic drum roll and a fan fair this tells them something important is about to happen. We the get an establishing shot showing us the location of the character, which is at the top of a building. There is a narrator speaking over the top of the dramatic non diegetic music this helps explain to the audience about the storyline. The wings on the costume of the character then open, this sound effect is exaggerated. We can then see that the character is dressed as a superhero explaining more about the genre of this film, a comedy. We see characters on the street pointing up at the building wondering like the audience watching the teaser trailer what is about to happen. Close up shots of the character at the top of the building show us he has no fear in his face even though he is standing on the roof of a sky scraper building. A low angle shot is used to show the person diving from the building. The 'superhero' then crashes straight into a taxi and the expressions on the peoples faces watching are shocked and unimpressed. We then get a pan shot emphasising what has just happened. An edit is used with text saying 'In 2010' this has a splattered background and bright colours are used. A shot reverse shot is used showing the person who was narrating having a conversation with who i presume are his friends. This is then followed by another edit with the words 'No powers?' this is a rhetorical question revealing a bit more to the audience about the film. He then puts on his green and yellow superhero costume and shows two poles, which look like weapons this is funny as he looks more like he is going to a fancy dress party. They then introduce the other main characters with an upbeat song in the background, uplifting the mood of the audience. They use edits to show the characters names and an action shot of them to show the audience a bit about their personality. There is a black out used to move on time in the trailer. Then the main character is shown and has the same name as the film. At the end a shot of when the film can be seen in the cinema and the website for the film.

Cross media marketing definition

This is secondary research from the Internet
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-media_marketing

Cross media marketing is a form of cross-promotion in which promotional companies commit to surpassing the traditional advertisements and decide to include extra appeals to their offered products.. The material can be communicated by any mass media such as e-mails, letters, web pages, or other recruiting sources. This method can be extremely successful for publishers because the marketing increases the ad’s profit from a single advertiser. Furthermore, this tactic generates a good liaison between the advertiser and the publisher, which also boosts the profits.

Typical "junk mail".One of the first steps to integrate cross media tactics effectively into a specific project is to evaluate and examine a customer’s preferences.

Scheduling – When should I contact the customer?
Rate – What is the correct time frame to leave between the delivery of my first, second and third message to the customer?
Pacing - How frequently should I check up on the customer?
Incidence – If a customer is not responding, how long should I continue to pursue the offer?

Cross media marketing programs are difficult to advertise; therefore, Damien Marchi, who was involved in the second season of Big Brother in France, created eight commandments to cross-media marketing success.

1.Give users access to exclusive content not seen on television. During a TV or movie production usually more material is shot than can be shown. Users like this unused content exclusively, for example on the Internet, through a club.
2.Interact with the show- Give the power to the audience. Involve the audience by having them vote, ask questions and by polling them
3.Make the show even more known. Use besides television the other media to keep the users in touch with the show.
4.Increases users’ loyalty. Loyalty of fans can be stimulated by a fan club and viral games.
5.Recreate the atmosphere. Levy the atmosphere of the TV show to another medium.
6.Continue the show on the web. Use the TV show to drive the other devices
7.Enhance the watching experience. Stimulate simultaneous use of media (browse the Internet when watching TV for example).
8.Use multiple devices. A multi-device system built around a TV show allows channel to increase the number of revenue streams.

One of the major problems with cross-media marketing is the creative development level. Getting one group to collectively use their creativity and communicate with the other areas of work is very difficult when one team is working on television, another is involved in designing the print creative, another is developing radio ads, and yet another is putting together the Internet program. Although the messaging elements are not very hard to compose, creating a campaign that is completely mutually dependent, with each branch of the project fulfilling their task, is quite impossible when the creative teams are split. Therefore, to achieve some sort of cohesion, teams must communicate and corporate with each branch.

By reading about cross media advertising i have a better idea of why i am producing 3 different products for one film. The three different products will help advertise the film to the target audience making it more likely to be a success when it is released. The promotion will be able to be seen over the Internet, outside and inside cinemas in magazines and on the television making it hard for people to miss. Before i produce my cross media marketing products i will have to find out my target audience and who my promotion will be aimed at.
